INDOOR HOUSEPLANT TRENDS
In the past, you’d see the darling of the indoor houseplant trend world, the Fiddle Leaf Fig plant, standing proudly by the couch in every home you visited. Every Pinterest photo and trendy blogger prominently featured Fiddle Leaf Figs. But like terrazzo tile, new plants are growing on us.
Personally, I love that more people are embracing the houseplant trend, whether they have green thumbs or not! No matter your expertise and skill level (or desire to be a plant mama), there’s an indoor plant for you.
Here are 5 of my favorite houseplants that are showing up in rooms across the country and vying for the love that was once only bestowed to Fiddle Leaf Figs.
HOUSEPLANTS WITH COLORFUL FOLIAGE
Part of the appeal of the houseplant trend is to show off your collection to other plant moms in the houseplant club. The more unique and colorful your plants, the more points you get. Like Grandmillennial design, plants are a statement and a way to combine classic with contemporary.
Right now, look for houseplants with colorful foliage. They will make a statement in your space and be like a living work of art: bright, captivating, and, like a work of art, will draw your eye up and around your room.
Marantas
Look for Marantas (prayer plants) with pink veins or neon leaves, Tradescantias (like Zebrina with deep purple running through and under its leaves), and uniquely-shaded Peperomias. I love the Watermelon and Ginny variety for adding a subtle uniqueness.
Caladium is another trendy houseplant with colorful leaves. Its foliage varies from deep green to pink to white; there’s something for every room and every taste.

UNIQUE SUCCULENTS
Succulent plants are a trend that’s still going strong. You can find them just about anywhere (like, the grocery store, of all places) and they’re hardy, making them great beginner-friendly houseplants. In fact, they like it best if you ignore them! They’re the definition of low maintenance. The only catch: they like a lot of light, so don’t place them in your windowless bathroom or in a northern-facing window.
Most varieties are also great for small spaces. They don’t branch, vine, or crawl out of their pot like other houseplants.
Since succulents have been big in houseplant trends for a while, to truly stand out, find a collection of succulents that aren’t as well known or as popular. Haworthia, String of Pearls, Plover Eggs, and Crinkle Leaf Plant are just a few unique

There are also colorful succulents that could nod to your role as a houseplant trendsetter. You’ll find them in shades ranging from blue to red and everything in between.
HOUSEPLANTS WITH BLUE UNDERTONES
Pick a houseplant that has blue undertones to coordinate with the 2023 Pantone Color of the Year, Classic Blue. Find a plant with deep green leaves; they’ll have blue undertones that will play very nicely with another 2023 trend. Agave and Yucca are two such blue-hued houseplants.

HARD-TO-KILL HOUSEPLANTS
Let’s be realistic: no one has time to baby a houseplant! Show me a temperamental plant (indoors or out) and I will show you a plant that I don’t recommend to my clients. Part of why succulents are so prolific nowadays is because of how easy they are to care for. There’s a correlation there!
Hard-to-kill houseplants aren’t going anywhere – in the trend rankings or in your home – because they require little time, attention, and skill from you. They’ll thrive in almost any circumstance, whether you ignore them or over-nurture them.
Many plants we’ve already listed here already are pretty hardy. A few others include: Sansevieria (you may know it as a Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue), Philodendron, and spider plants.

STATEMENT PLANTS
Now, it’s time for the showstoppers! Making a statement with your houseplants is always a trend. Look for large-scale plants with dramatic leaves to fill and balance your space. These plants will act as art because they’ll draw the eye up and around the room. It’ll also feel like you’re living in the forest without actually having to go outside (that’s the best kind of forest, if you ask me)!
I love Bird of Paradise because of the detail in the leaves and the unique shape. They’re trendy without being in your face (the definition of class). Other great and mostly easy-to-care-for statement indoor plants are: Banana Trees, Elephant Ear, and Ruffled Fan Palms.

Adding green to your space helps ground it with a natural element. It instantly makes any room more chic, comfortable, and intentional. After all, you can’t get more intentional than deciding to care for a plant and actually making sure you’re taking care of it so it lives!
